advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need
Advertising does a few things. When done right it keeps the brand in your mind. This is called top of mind awareness. It is also a form of entertainment that also puts the brand on your mind.
All advertising does is say the next time you need this item think of us.

Advertising lets you know what is available to buy and how it may/ or may not help you enjoy daily life more.
You make the decision to stick your hand in your wallet and pull out the money you need for other things and buy the stuff you really don’t need.
A commerical can not spend your money — only you can.
