I want to get into advertising but I don’t know where to start?
I would love to work for an advertising company, and work writing commercials.
What do I need to major in? What kind of internships should I do? Should I get an associates, bachelors, or masters degree? Is the pay decent in advertising?
I just graduated with a Bachelor’s in Advertising. It is a fun career path to take! You should check out www.betterthanschool.com. That’s where I found the school that I am going to to get my Master’s. It gives a good description of the requirements for the degree and what career options you can do with your degree. I would say go for your Bachelor’s then go for your Master’s. Pay isn’t the best at first but it is easy to build your way up! I would like to say that it is a very rewarding career. You should do journalism & mass communication. Part of j&mc is strategic communication (the politically correct term for advertising). You’ll be able, in college, to find some journalism & strat. comm. internships. You may want to focus on getting a master’s degree because the advertising industry is extremely competitive and in-flux right now (as is all of journalism). However, try to get an internship or a job between a bachelor’s and master’s as experience is very very important. Advertising pays pretty well, as it is competitive.

Although having a business-related degree does sound like a good idea, many business professors are pie-in-the-sky who have no experience. You know, you’ll learn much more from experience than sitting in a classroom. One guy graduated with an MBA, and he’s competing with job candidates who have 20 years of experience.
Apprenticeships/internships are the best places to start. Check out some ads from companies who are seeking interns, or post a "Internship Wanted" ad.
