How does advertising tends to shape our society or does it reflect back what we have become?

Could it be that advertising has shaped our society because all the affect it has on us and our consumer behavior?

I think it reflects who we've become. If it wasn't appealing, then no one would buy it. I think everything is society's fault though, so take it for what it is.
